I believe the efficient way is manually tracing the photo with the Pen tool in Illustrator. But if you want a quick and dirty way of doing it, you can use Image Trace/Live Trace.

If it's a full color image you'll usually get an unmanageable mess from Image Trace, and will spend more time cleaning it up than it will take to bezier it out with the pen tool.

Image Trace can be useful, though, on extracting silhouettes from objects in white backgrounds and the like.

So it depends on the image, and how tonally isolated the object you want to extract is.

Hi.
What's the purpose for doing this? If it's a full colour photo I wouldnt convert to vector, live tracing will make your photo look hideous. I would just source a higher quality photo if resizing is your issue.

I agree with Meow. You have so much more control if you draw with a pen instead of live trace. Many times it has taken me longer to clean up live trace then if I would have just drew it out from the get go
