easy 3 step to make a pattern on adobe Illustrator,
Create pattern swatches:

1. Create artwork for the pattern.

2. Use the Selection tool to select the artwork and bounding box (if any) that will make up the pattern tile.

3.Do one of the following:

a. Choose Edit > Define Pattern, enter a name in the New Swatch dialog box, and click OK. The pattern displays in the Swatches panel.

b. Drag and drop the artwork to the Swatches panel.

its so simple and useful.

Its very important to make sure that the pattern chunks look good as a pattern and that they don't overlap in a weird way.

An old thread... but about the bounding box, it should have no fill and no stroke, and it should be placed in the very back of your artwork. Otherwise it won't work properly

I fnd that using the "snap to grid" helps a lot to avoid any overlapping.
