To create effective icon designs, you should take into consideration the audience, simplicity, size, lighting, style and perspective. Some guidelines for creating effective icon designs are listed below:

1. Make sure your icon fits in where you intend to use it. It should work harmoniously together with it’s surroundings. Your icon designs should be relative to the graphic system they’re used in, each icon should differ from the surrounding icons but works with them at the same time.
2. You should always consider your audience in your icon design. Cultural considerations are important as well as the targeted market.
3. Keep your icons simple, iconic and easy to understand. Try not to complicate , or overly illustrate your icon designs.
4. Make the lighting, reflections, and shadows consistent so that they function coherently together.
5. Try to make the range of perspectives in your icon design work together. Use the same angle, and same placement for all your icons that are in one set.
